skate fishing charters for up to 8 passengers
Skate are slow growing and mature fish can
reach 200lbs and more, specimens weighing up to 400lb have been
caught commercially in the past.
Skate fishing
is quite different from general sea angling
- the vessel
is anchored up in deep water usually 100 - 150 metres
- the tackle
is much bigger and heavier
- the line is weighted with a 2 kilo
lead
- you will wear a
shoulder and kidney harness with a butt pad to help you reel
in
- any
fish you land will be measured and tagged then photographed
and released

We provide 135lb class Penn Rods and Reels
for skate fishing from
GANNET.

Penn
Tuna Sticks - 135lb class - hard at work

Once landed, skate
are measured and tagged
the details are recorded and submitted to
Glasgow City Museum

Skate are placed on
the 'stretcher' to ease
their return to the water
advice
on gear for your skate fishing charter
CLOTHING
Think about the
outdoor conditions - if you get wet there's a good chance you will
be cold!
The West Coast weather is very variable and
you should plan accordingly for your comfort and safety.
In Autumn, Winter and Spring you'll need fully protective thermal wet
weather oilskins, or a flotation suit or similar, over some warm layers.
For Summer fishing, a
couple of layers under good lighter weight waterproofs should be fine.
A hat and gloves won't go wrong at any time of the year!
WATERPROOF FOOTWEAR
Most importantly, wear good deck wellies or other soft soled waterproof
footwear.
not suitable
- climbing boots, rigger boots or other hard soled
footwear
- any footwear which is not waterproof!
Sunscreen is also a good idea, as the reflection on the water can be very
strong even on overcast days, and you may like to have sunglasses with
you.
remember to bring your
camera!
